National Spirit Hurdle Charity Raceday at Fontwell – Pete The Feat was a star!

Pete the Feat

Our lovely Pete the Feat enjoyed a very exciting day at Fontwell on the 26th of February 2023, the day of our charity lunch and the very prestigious Spirit Hurdle Race.

He paraded in the pre-parade ring for an hour and was very well-behaved for Clare, his handler.

Pete was surrounded by many racegoers who had supported him during his successful career in which he had 47 runs with 11 wins and 12 placings. Some of his followers were happy to share their memories of Pete, one mentioned he was able to purchase a car with his winnings from one of Pete’s successful races, and another was able to recall every single race and where he was placed.

Nigel was very emotional seeing Pete parading and looking every inch ‘the star’ of the ring. And this was a very special day, especially for Peter and Graham who were Pete’s previous owners prior to him coming to us at The Racehorse Sanctuary for his much deserved retirement.

All the horses at the Centre have wintered well and very much looking forward to the sunshine, spring grass and the removal of their rugs.

Our Winter Feed Appeal 2023

– your donation will make all the difference.

Please support our Winter Feed Appeal to keep all our ex-racehorses in good health during these cold winter months.

Winter has really hit the Racehorse Sanctuary and Rehoming Centre hard with the extended freezing conditions on top of the usual cold, very wet and windy weather. This has led to the horses needing extra feed, supplements, and in some cases, medication which is essential in keeping them healthy and happy during these long winter months.

The increase in costs comes in the form of extra good quality hay, plenty of fibre rich feed and bedding such as straw and shavings, all of which have dramatically increased in price since the summer due to the ongoing war in Ukraine and the cost of energy crisis.

In parallel to this, the horse’s wellbeing relies on them being able to have a degree of turnout every day so that they can move freely and have the all important grazing time which helps keep their gut and mental health at its best. This daily turnout helps avoid stress and joint stiffness as well as gut issues such as colic and excess acid, which some ex-racehorses suffer from, a legacy from their time in racing. So to keep the paddocks in a fair and safe condition regular maintenance of the fields such as repairing fencing is essential. And with the cost of post and rail also increasing dramatically we really need your help.

Please donate now whatever you can

Every donation, whether £5, £10 or any amount of your choice will quickly add up and mean so much to us and the horses. We don’t have a crystal ball to see if the weather will continue to be as bad as it has been so far this winter so, if you can, please help us with a donation today. Thank you.

The Racehorse Sanctuary Christmas Appeal 2022

Racehorse-sanctuary-Christmas-Appeal-2023

Thank you to Emma Hughes for the photography and Spriggs Florist of Petworth for the festive wreath.

We’re dreaming of an all-weather sand school, your donation could make it a reality

To donate £5, text HORS001 to 70970

To donate £10, text HORS001 to 70191

Please support our Christmas Appeal to build an all-weather sand school and a brighter future for our ex-racehorses.

The Racehorse Sanctuary & Rehoming Centre desperately needs an all-weather sand school, so we can rehabilitate more ex-racehorses. Thoroughbreds are so trainable and can be amazing in their new roles after retiring from racing. They just need time and support in adjusting to their new life before going on to a loving home and new career.

Being able to ride safely all year round in an enclosed area will be invaluable for our team in helping every horse in our care achieve their full potential. The sand school will also give prospective keepers more opportunities to spend time with their matched riding companion to ensure they’ll have a long and happy life together.

At Mulsey Farm we are only able to use the fields for riding some of the year, weather permitting, but being on clay makes riding very difficult during the winter months . We also have a horse walker, courtesy of the Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust. However, an all-weather sand school, would make an enormous difference to our efforts to re-home ridden horses.

With your help, we can build on this year’s success

This year we’ve successfully rehomed seven horses: two companion horses and five ridden horses, who are enjoying their new lives immensely.

Two of our former racehorses have also found valuable new roles in the world of Equine Assisted Therapy and Learning, which transforms the lives of both humans and horses. With their sensitive and intelligent nature, thoroughbreds are eminently suitable for therapeutic and educational activities, and an all-weather sand school would allow us to develop this inspiring work. With your help, we will.

Please contribute whatever you can to our appeal this Christmas

If you can contribute to The Centre’s all-weather sand school fund, we would be absolutely thrilled. Every donation, whether £5, £10 or any amount of your choice will quickly add up and mean so much to us and the horses.

We have planning permission for the sand school and would love to install it in the spring. All we need now is the money to make it happen. So, if you can, please help us with a donation today. Thank you.
