Are you considering rehoming an ex-racehorse?
Thousands of horses leave the racing industry every year, but retirement from racing needn’t mean the end for these horses as thoroughbreds are highly trainable and have talents for many other disciplines. Retraining for most of them is straightforward and they make the transition to becoming a riding horse with ease.
If you are thinking of taking on an ex-racehorse, there are a number of things you need to consider carefully.
Can you afford it? It is a huge long-term commitment, not just in time but also financially, so being able to provide for a horse needs careful planning.
Take into consideration the following:
- Insurance [including personal accident, legal liability, and vet fees]
- Keep e.g. grazing, stabling, livery fees, insurance, farrier, regular worming, veterinary fees, annual flu and tetanus injections
- Equipment, for the horse, and yourself
- Have you the experience or the help and support to take on an ex-racer?
If you have ticked all the boxes, then why not contact us today for more information on the horses in our care to see if we have one suitable?
